I took Marla and the girls tonight to Winter Jam, mostly to see our favorite band – Skillet! I’m thankful to have gotten to meet Jonathan Chu, their violinist, a few times and also follow what God is doing in he and his family’s lives online. He also happens to enjoy photography. How could you not love this guy? Thanks for rocking tonight Chu, and for stopping by and meeting the fam before the show. The girls kept screaming and pointing when they saw you…..what a night!

Snapped this pic with my phone in the dark, while we helped our friend Britt pack up her Penske truck tonight (in the bitter, snowy weather), as she moves to work at Mission Meadows (church camp) in New York. Thanks for being such a great friend, Britt. We’ll see you soon!

Monks on a moto

Treating 23 kids and 4 adults from Asia’s Hope orphanage to first trip to market in Phnom Penh

This afternoon we (with the assistant of an activity fund accumulated from some friends in the states) treated the 23 kids and 4 adults from the Asia’s Hope orphanage we sponsor to each spend a few dollars ($5 per kid and $10 per adult) at the Central Market here in Phnom Penh. Most of them either bought a pair of shoes or a watch. We enjoyed walking around and talking with them the most! Then we treated them to a fun dinner at Pizza Company (5 large pizzas, 160 chicken wings, and 12 pitchers of Coke). Most of them preferred the chicken wings, which wouldn’t surprise you if you knew how much Cambodians like their chicken! We’re thankful God chose to bless them, and we got to be a small part of it!

Very special meal with the Yin family in Cambodia

I won’t try to describe how special this meal with the Yin family (mother, father, their four sons, and two friends) was for our family – VERY special time we have been looking forward to for a year now. Top row – Marla Taviano (my wife), Phally Yin (mother), Olivia Taviano (11), Nina Taviano (5), Veasna Yin (20), Ava Taviano (9), Pitreach Yin (13), Yvonne Stiles (friend), Steph Davis (friend), Sovanna Yin (father). Bottom row – Pitou Yin (16), Panha Yin (18), and myself. God is so good! Off to Thailand in the morning, for six days, then back to Phnom Penh for one more week before returning to the states.

Three great men of God in Cambodia

Marla and I met Panha (in center), our translator for our missions team of 7, back in 2010. We also briefly got to chat with his father, Sovanna (on right), on that trip as well, but we were never able to meet Veasna (on left) then. This year our family has gotten to hang out and minister with each of them, and hear more of the stories of their lives. God has done a miraculous work in how each of them have come to accept what Christ did for them, and they are each doing lots of work here to expand the Kingdom of God in Cambodia. Thank you to the Yin family, for being such a blessing to us!

Special feast at orphanage

Savong and Pisay (the directors at Asia’s Hope Prek Eng 3 orphanage) provided our family and friend/translator Panha (between them on right) with a special feast today for dinner! We enjoyed homemade pizza, fried rice, noodles, barbeque steak skewers, vegetables and Coca Cola. Amazing food, but even more amazing people!

A full cart to carry

Snapped this while standing along the street outside of the boy’s center that we’ve been staying at during the mornings here in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Not sure how heavy the cart is, but it doesn’t look like a job I could handle. This culture sure is interesting.

Late night arrival in Phnom Penh to lots of friends

We arrived at 11:10pm (after 27 hours of travel) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia to 11 great friends who stayed up and made the trip to pick us and our luggage up at the airport. Savong and Pisay (orphanage directors) brought three of the kids in their car, Yvonne, Panha and Veasna lined up two tuk-tuks (Panha’s father and a friend) for us to ride in, and another van that hauled all of our 13 bags and 10 carry-ons to the Samaritan House.
